Storm Keeps us Busy - 7/25/2010

As a result of a quick-moving line of thunder storms, Leola received significant storm damage. This damage kept volunteers extremely busy, responding to twelve calls in a two-hour period. Numerous roads were shut down for extended periods of time due to electrical poles and wires being blown down.

The members of the ULFC would like to thank the community for their continued support. This was the first year that current members can remember having good weather each day and we had a great turn out!


Recruiting Early - 7/2010

Three members of the Upper Leacock Fire Company accepted an invitation and visited the Park Family for a brief visit last month. Their oldest grandson, Graham (3 years old), is extremely interested in firefighting. The members took time to give Graham a tour of the engine and demonstrated their gear and equipment. We hope that we've left a positive impression and look forward to seeing Graham in 11 years.





Busy Day for Volunteers - 7/21/2010

The volunteers at ULFC have been kept busy today, responding to four calls. Calls included two automatic fire alarms, one vehicle accident stand-by, and one assist to West Earl for traffic control.

Both automatic alarms were caused by the vehicle accident stand-by incident. This incident involved a hit-and-run accident where a reported truck hit both an electric pole and a building. The police department was the first on the scene in the 2500 block of Horseshoe Road, reporting a pole and electric wires on the roadway. Engine 3-11-2 checked the damaged structure for stability and controlled all utilities into the building. PP&L was advised and the roadway remained closed for approximately 10 hours while they replaced the pole and secured the power lines.


Vehicle Accident with Entrapment - 7/11/2010

Just after 9:00 AM, our volunteers were alerted for a vehicle accident with confirmed entrapment at the intersection of Newport Road and Stumptown Road. 3-11 chiefs quickly signed onto the radio and were advised that the police department was on location confirming one passenger trapped and a seperate vehicle into a house. Engine 3-1-1 arrived and began vehicle stabilization while Engine 3-11-2 started rescue operations. Engine 3-11-2 was assisted by Rescue 4-8 to overcome a few challenges during the extrication process. The patient was removed and placed into the care of EMS on the scene.

Vehicle Accident with Entrapment - 7/08/2010

At 0135 hours on Thursday morning, ULFC was dispatched to the 2600 block of West Eby Road for a reported vehicle accident with entrapment. Chief 4-10-2 was the first person on the scene, confirming one vehicle on its roof with entrapment. Engine 4-10-2 was first arriving and began vehicle stabilization while Engine 3-11-2 arrived and began rescue operations. Engine 3-11-2 was assisted in rescue operations by Rescue 4-8 and one patient was extricated in less than five minutes. Two patients were transported to a local hospital with minor injuries. According to newspaper articles, the driver was cited for a DUI and underage drinking.

Dwelling Fire - 6/14/2010

At 1215 hours on Monday afternoon, ULFC was dispatched to 60 Glenbrook Road for a reported dwelling fire. Chief 3-11-2 (Huber) and Deputy 3-1 arrived and found smoke coming from the eves of the attached garage with the owner reporting a dryer fire in the garage. Both Engine 3-11-1 and 3-1-1 arrived on scene within a few minutes and crews forced open the rear door and attacked the fire with a 2 inch line. Additional crews forced open the garage door for access and ventilation and provided a backup line. The fire was contained to the garage and placed under control at 1229. The dryer was removed and the residence was ventilated.

Vehicle Accident with Entrapment - 6/7/2010

On Tuesday morning, at 0653 hours Engine 3-11-2, Engine 3-1-2, and Truck 2-4 were alerted for a vehicle accident with entrapment involving a tractor trailer in the 200 block of West Main Street. Chief 3-11-2 (Huber) was on the scene within 30 seconds and confirmed two patients with serious injuries and heavily entrapped. Engine 3-1-2 was the first arriving engine and began to stabilize the vehicle and pulled a foam line for fire protection. Engine 3-11-2 arrived and immediately started hydraulic rescue operations. Both patients were extricated within nine minutes, placed into the care of waiting EMS, and transported to LGH Trauma Center.

A special thanks to the local residents and Byer's Butterflake Bakery who generously supplied responders with refreshments. It was greatly appreciated!

Firemen’s Convention - 6/5/2010

The 90th Annual Lancaster County Firemen’s Convention was hosted this past weekend by the Bareville and Upper Leacock Fire Companies. The memorial service and awards ceremony was held on Friday evening to honor firefighters who are no longer with us.

The 90th Annual Lancaster County Firemen’s Convention will be hosted in Leola this weekend. Events include a memorial service on Friday evening and a parade down main street on Saturday afternoon. We are expecting over 140 firetrucks and many marching units. Please join us!

House Fire Assist - 05/31/2010

ULFC was dispatched to assist Bareville Fire Company with light smoke from a home in the first block of East Main Street. A small smoldering fire was discovered behind the siding of the house and quickly extinguished. Investigation of this incident continues and it is believed to be related to a power surge in the area earlier that day.

House Fire Assist - 04/10/2010

ULFC was dispatched to assist Witmer Fire Company with a working house fire in the 2200 block of Creek Hill Rd. Engine 3-11-1 hit the street within minutes with a full crew. Crews reported to man power staging while the engine continued on and set up a tanker fill site. A quick response by all companies contained the fire to the kitchen of the house and the incident was resolved quickly.

Forcible Entry Training - 03/20/2010

Five members of the ULFC travelled to the Lancaster County public safety training center for an 8-hour, hands-on training class on forcible entry. The class was taught by Traditions Training. Members were taught techniques on forcing inward opening, outward opening, and overhead rollup doors, as well as lock defeating stategies. The training was attended by numerous fire companies from Lancaster County and additional PA counties.

100th Anniversary Banquet - 02/06/2010

Despite 16 inches of snow, the ULFC held its 100th Anniversary Banquet dinner at the New Holland American Legion Banquet Facility. Approximately 50 members braved the road conditions and joined us for food, fun, awards, and brotherhood. Entertainment for the evening was provided by Hypnotist Ramelle MaCoy.

A huge thank you to Lafayette Fire Company for providing stand-by fire protection for the evening.
